Maturing as a Christian

“When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” - 1 Corinthians 13:11 (NKJV) Today’s blog entry is titled “Maturing as a Christian”…

Can you think back to the time when you were in Kindergarten? For many people that was a fun time. While there was some school work involved for the young students in order to help them learn, there were also a lot of cool activities to help hold the student’s attention and make it an enjoyable experience for them.  As time goes on and a student progresses to another grade, the work becomes more advanced, and the responsibility of the student increases. For example, an 8th grader’s workload /responsibilities is different from the workload/responsibilities of a 1st grader. As a student learns more and matures, there is a higher expectation placed on them.

“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” – Hebrews 5:12-14

In our Christian walk we should be maturing as well, it’s an ongoing process. As we learn more of the Word of God, we should continually be applying it to our lives. For example, if a person has been saved for 5 years, they should be further along (in regards to their maturity) than they were when they first got saved. This isn’t to say the person will be perfect (none of us are), but there should definitely be some notable progress. We should be making an effort to complete the various assignments that God has called us to do. And while we my face some challenges along the way, we can take comfort in the fact that we have Jesus Christ. He loves us and He understands the things we deal with. So it’s important to follow Him even if we are in situations that we don’t understand.

As we seek God, He can reveal the areas of our lives that we need growth in, and He can also help us grow in those areas. Remember we’re not in this thing alone. The important thing is, to be willing and obedient (See Isaiah 1:19). So as we continue to grow in our Christian walk let us strive to do everything that God has called us to do.

“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.  Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.” – Philippians 3:14-15
