Beware of Idolatry

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.” – Exodus 20:3-4. Today’s blog entry is titled “Beware of Idolatry”.

As Christians, it’s important that we don’t allow anything to get in the way of our relationship with Jesus Christ. And while a person may not intentionally plan to start putting other things before Him, it can happen subtly over time if an individual is not careful. The things that people idolize can vary from person to person. For some people it could be a famous person. For other’s it could be a boyfriend/girlfriend. And for some it could also be something such as a sport or activity (as well as a number of other things).

When an individual takes their focus off of God, they can become distracted by all types of things, which can lead to bad decisions. Let’s take a look at a passage of scripture in the Old Testament…

“And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.” –Exodus 32:1-4

It’s important that we follow God’s instructions and don’t allow ourselves to become impatient. When a person becomes impatient they can start to seek out other things instead of obeying God. God loves us, and He knows what’s best for us. As it says in 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” If we examine our lives and find that we have been putting other things before God, it’s important for us to repent, and  put God first again… So as we continue to grow in our walk with Jesus Christ, let us remember to keep Him first and avoid idolatry.

“Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.” – 1 Corinthians 10:14
