“For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”- Matthew 3:3. As Christians it’s important to remember that we should be focused on pointing people to Jesus, and giving Him the glory (instead of trying to gain vain glory for ourselves). Today’s blog entry is titled “Show People the Way, But Don’t Get In the Way”…
Picture this; you go to a church that you’ve never been to before to attend a wedding. After getting inside the church you are greeted by an usher who asks you if you know the bride or groom so that you can be seated in the appropriate section. While walking you to your seat, the usher starts talking to you about various things not related to the wedding. And after you sit down the usher continues to stand next to you and starts talking about his own upcoming wedding that’s a few months away, and what type of house he wants to buy, etc. This goes on even after the wedding has started.
The usher in this scenario obviously lost focus of what he was supposed to be doing. He started out the right way by greeting the person, but then he got off track and became a distraction to the person. As Christians it’s important that we don’t allow ourselves to get off track from what our God given assignments are. When God is using us, it can be very exciting and encouraging; however it’s important to remember that we should be focused on God getting the glory. It’s God who has given us different talents/gifts/abilities. We should use those gifts to direct people to Him, and help them grow in their relationship with Him.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” - Romans 12:2
Renewing our mind with the Word of God is extremely important. When we renew our mind, it can help us maintain our focus on what we should be doing. God’s ways are different than the world’s ways of doing things. The world often puts emphasis on “Me”, “I”, “My Accomplishments”, and receiving recognition from others. However our focus should be on pleasing God. What good would it be to do things that impress a lot of people, and yet displease God. The way God feels about us is what really matters. With that being said, I want to make it clear that I’m not saying that we should go around degrading ourselves or having a negative view of ourselves. I’m simply saying that we should have the proper view of ourselves. It’s like the usher in the scenario, his job as an usher isn’t to belittle himself, but his job also isn’t to be a distraction to the guests at the wedding either. His job is to lead people to their seats. And likewise as Christians we should be doing our job, we should be pointing people to Jesus Christ.
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” – Mark 16:15
