Be Unselfish

Have you ever been around someone who constantly asks for the help/support of others, yet when they have the opportunity to help/support other people they decide that they would rather spend their time doing something else? Today’s blog entry deals with being unselfish. “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” Philippians 2:4

“And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” 2 Corinthians 5:15

Jesus Christ is the epitome of unselfishness; He laid down His life so that we could receive salvation. His love for us was shown by his willingness to go through suffering, ridicule, and death. As Christians, we should be willing to make sacrifices. It’s good for us to have goals and aspirations, but we shouldn’t allow the pursuit of goals to cause us to become selfish.

“Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.” Luke 6:36

Sometimes it can be easy to look at how things directly affect us, but it’s important that we consider someone else’s perspective before we jump to conclusions in situations. For instance, say person A has been repeating calling person B and hasn’t been able to reach them. As a result, person A eventually gets mad at person B, and even starts saying negative things about person B to others. However, as time goes on, person A finds out that person B had lost their phone, and wasn’t intentionally trying to avoid person A. When we only focus on how things affect us, we can lose sight of the fact that the other individual(s) may be dealing with their own set of issues.

“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” Galatians 5:24-26

If we want to live an unselfish lifestyle, we should follow Jesus’ example. We should continually renew our minds, and avoid vanity. We shouldn’t allow jealousy or envy in our lives. We should love people, we should encourage people, and we should be willing to help people grow in their walk with Jesus.

“We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.” Romans 15:1-3
