Consistency In Christ

Being consistent is an important part of the Christian walk. “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58…Today’s blog entry deals with consistency in Christ.

Do you have a favorite dish at a certain restaurant that you go to? If so, one of the things that probably keeps you ordering that particular item is that you’re under the assumption that it’s pretty much going to taste about the same every time you get it (There may be a few minor changes every now and then but you’re not expecting anything drastic). Now could you picture how you would feel if the restaurant started making major adjustments to the dish each time you came? Say for instance it’s a pasta meal that’s supposed to come with Italian Sausage and cheese along with the pasta. And the next time you order the meal, your waitress brings you a plate that has Italian Sausage and cheese, but doesn’t have any pasta noodles. When you mention this to the waitress, she replies “Yeah I know, we’ve just been really busy today and we didn’t feel like putting any noodles on there this time (and from that point on they always made the dish with something missing that was supposed to be included).” You probably wouldn’t be too happy about that. Chances are you would stop going there.

In our walk with Christ it’s important that we are consistently seeking Him, and spending time with Him. With this being said, I don’t mean that we should do it in a ritualistic (just going through the motions) type of way. But rather that we should genuinely desire to grow in our relationship with Jesus. We should consistently read our Bible, we should consistently pray, we should consistently abstain from sinful behavior. This isn’t to say that we will never make mistakes, but rather to say that we should give the very best effort that we can every single day.

"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." – Colossians 2:8

Sometimes people may not necessarily plan to start spending less time with God. They may not plan to start disobeying God. But what can happen is that they start spending more time around people or in environments (or watching/listening to things) that go against what the Bible teaches, which can cause them to focus on the wrong things. Or sometimes a person can just get so busy with life (Job, School, etc.) that they start to take their focus off of God. It’s important that we don’t allow ourselves to get distracted. If we want to keep growing in our walk with Christ, we should apply what the Bible says, to our lives consistently. Think of a person that has a garden, if they want the plants to grow they need to make sure the plants are water consistently. If they make sure the plants are watered for one week, and then they skip 4 weeks, and then come back and water the plants a couple of days in a row, and from there skip another 2 weeks, they probably aren’t going to get the growth results they desire.
In our walk with Christ, let us seek Him consistently and continue to grow.

"Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;" - Philippians 1:27
