Count The Cost

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it.” - Luke 14:28. It’s important to realize that when we take on a certain task, there is responsibility that comes along with it.

Picture this, there is a very talented basketball player that recently finished up his college career and is now ready to make the jump to the NBA. A lot of teams are interested in him, and he ends up getting drafted at the number 1 pick. After being drafted, he starts working out with the team and getting prepared for the upcoming season. Then during a meeting with his coach he says “Hey coach, there’s something I wanted to let you know. I really enjoy playing basketball, but I really dislike traveling to a lot of different states. I could deal with it in college because I didn’t have to travel as much or as far, but after looking at this schedule, I can tell you right now that I’m probably going miss at least 15-20 road games.” The shocked coach replies, WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?! This is the NBA, you know we (and every other team) take a lot of road trips throughout the season.

If the basketball player really wants to play in the NBA, he should be willing to travel with the team and play in all the road games. Likewise in our lives, it’s important that we make the necessary sacrifices that go along with the different tasks that God has called us to complete. Romans 12:1 lets us know that we are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God. Being willing to deny our own wants and desires, in order to carry out what God desires us to do, is an important part of the Christian walk. Luke 14:27 says “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”

Sometimes we may wonder why things aren’t happening in our lives as quickly as we would like them to. There could be a number of reasons for this, but one reason could be because God is preparing us to be able to endure the different challenges that will come along with the assignments He has given us. If we try to take on an assignment prematurely, our lack of experience could lead to mistakes that we would not have made if we had waited and done things in God’s timing.

“Through wisdom is a house builded; and by understanding it is established.” – Proverbs 24:3

And don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that we should shy away from responsibility. However, I do feel that it’s important to be lead by God in the decisions we make, and not by our own agenda. Let’s continue to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ, and be willing to make the sacrifices He requires of us. Salvation is a great gift from God, and we should always remember that.

“Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterward build thine house.” Proverbs 24:27
