Dealing With Lust

If a person has lust in their life, it can lead to big problems. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” - 1 John 2:16. Today’s blog entry is titled “Dealing With Lust”.

One way lust can be defined is “an intense longing” (Via Merriam-Webster.com)

When we hear the word lust, one of the first things that may often come to mind is sexual desire. And while sexual desire is definitely a common form of lust, it’s not the only form. People can also lust for things such as: power, fame, money, and many other things. While the things an individual lusts for may vary from person to person, the cause for sinful lust is the result of the desire to please self.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” – Matthew 16:24

Self-denial is an important part of the Christian walk. When a person puts their own desires ahead of obeying God, they open the door to a lot of trouble. We should always remember that we are here to please God. Jesus went through so much so for us, and we should be able to make sacrifices for Him. If a person is dealing with sexual lust, they should examine what they are taking in (as far as what are they watching, listening to, etc). If a person is constantly thinking about committing fornication, it can make it even more challenging to resist the temptation of having pre-marital sex. It’s also important for the person to avoid situations that would give them easy access to commit fornication.

If a person is lusting for power, there could be a number of reasons for this. One reason could be because they have unresolved issues from their past where they felt like they did not have control, and as a result they constantly want to have control. Another reason could be because they would like to receive a certain level of recognition from the general public. Sometimes people try to cover up insecurity by attaining certain things. However, if we have insecurity in our lives, we should address it. We should be secure with who we are in Christ.

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.” – 2 Timothy 4:2

At the time of this blog entry, some High School Football teams have already played their first game of the season. And while the practice regiments may have varied from team to team, one common form of practicing leading up to the first game is called Two-A-Days. This is where the team holds two separate practices in a day. Doing this helps a team prepare and get conditioned for the upcoming season. The preparation starts before the day of the first game. Likewise in our Christian walk, it’s important to build ourselves up in understanding the Word of God. We shouldn’t wait until we have a problem to start reading the Bible, praying, etc. It should be a way of life.

As we continue to grow in our walk with Christ, let us remember to keep Him first. Don’t allow lust to get you off track. Be secure in Christ.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. – Matthew 6:33
