Do Not Be Afraid

Throughout our Christian walk we may face opposition, and various challenges; However we should never allow fear to stop us from obeying God. “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” – Psalm 27:1 …Today’s blog entry is titled “Do Not Be Afraid”.

Can you think of a time when you were really afraid to do something at first, but later worked up enough courage to do it, and after the fact you thought to yourself “That wasn’t bad at all, I wish I would have done it sooner”. Maybe it was riding a roller coaster for the first time, or maybe it was the first time you had to speak in front of a large group of people. If we are dominated by fear, we can miss out on many things, however if we trust in Jesus, and overcome fear, we can get a lot accomplished.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7

Someone reading this may be thinking, “Yeah, I know I shouldn’t be afraid, but I’m having a hard time getting over this particular thing in my life….What should I do?” Well, let’s look at another verse that talks about fear… “ There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”- 1 John 4:18. This is a very insightful verse. It’s lets us know that “perfect love casteth out fear”, and 1 John 4:8 lets us know that God is love. So if we want to get rid of fear, we should trust God, and obey His Word. Fear is a tactic that the enemy tries to use against Christians, and God lets us know how to withstand the enemy in Ephesians chapter 6. “ Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” – Ephesians 6:11. You can check out Ephesians 6:12-18 for a more information about the armor of God.

When we meditate on God’s Word, and apply it, we can start to see some major changes take place in our lives. If a person is having a hard time getting over the fear of a certain thing, they should spend time in prayer about the situation, and read/meditate on a number of scriptures that deal specifically with not being afraid. The Bible lets us know that faith without works is dead (See James 2:17), so we also need to have faith and move forward. If a person has been afraid to speak publicly in the past, and God provides them with a new opportunity to speak, the person needs to walk by faith, and speak. When a person does something for the first time (that they were previously afraid to do), they may still feel uncomfortable at first, but the important thing is that they move forward.

As we continue to grow in our walk with Jesus, let us have courage, and do the things that He has called us to do. Be strong in the Lord, and never let fear hold you back.
“For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” – Isaiah 41:13
