Don't Give Into Temptation

“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” – James 1:12 …Today’s blog entry is titled, “Don’t Give Into Temptation”….

As we continue to grow in our walk with Jesus Christ, it’s important for us to stay focused on doing what He has called us to do. We should obey His word regardless of how we feel, and regardless of the current trends of society. Sometimes we may encounter challenges during our Christian walk, but we shouldn’t allow those challenges to cause us to cause us to lose faith in God. During challenging times, we should continue to trust in Jesus, and rely upon Him.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” – Galatians 6:9

A person can be tempted in a number of different ways. And a certain thing that tempts one individual may not necessarily tempt another individual. So let’s take a look at the following passage of scripture to get to the root of the issue:

“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” - James 1:14-15

The following passage of scripture is very insightful. We shouldn’t allow anything to draw us away from the Word of God. We should have an appetite for the things of God (not sinful things). With this in mind, it’s very important for us to be careful of the things we watch/listen to, as well as the places we go. For example, let’s look at things from another perspective. If a person really enjoys eating chocolate, and has made a commitment to stop eating chocolate for two weeks; it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to go the candy section of the grocery store several times throughout those two weeks and look at the various chocolate candies the store sells (picking up various candy bars, smelling them, etc). Going to the grocery store and doing this puts the person in a vulnerable position where they are more likely to give into the urge to buy and eat the chocolate. Likewise if a person knows they have been battling the temptation to commit a certain sinful act, they shouldn’t put themselves in a vulnerable situation that would increase their chances of committing the sinful act.

Every day of our lives we should give the best effort that we can to serve God. Yes there are times when we make mistakes during the Christian walk, but we should be striving to grow in our relationship with Jesus on a continual basis (See 1st John 1:5-10). So let us remember to stand on the Word of God regardless of what we are facing. Remember that Jesus Christ laid down His life for us, so let us do the very best that we can to live a life that pleases Him.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7
