Don't Hold On When It's Time To Let Go

When God is doing something new in our lives, there may be a tendency for us to want to stay in our comfort zone, or continue to do things the way we’ve done them in the past. But it’s important that we trust God, follow Him, and do things His way regardless of how we feel. “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”- Isaiah 43:19. Today’s blog entry is titled “Don’t Hold On When It’s Time To Let Go.”

Can you think back to a time in your life when you had gotten used to doing something, and then the time came for you to move on to something else? For example, think back to high school (if you’re still in high school, or younger, just imagine the scenario with me…lol). As graduation got closer, you may have had a lot on your mind. You may have started to think about how you were going to miss many of your friends that you grew up with (since many of you would be relocating for college or other endeavors). Or you may have been thinking about how your responsibilities were going to change as you begin your “post” high school life. And while those type of thoughts may have entered your mind, it was important that you moved on to next phase of your life after you were done with high school. Could you picture someone who had graduated from High School 5 years ago, continuing to try to go back to their high school classes every day because they still weren’t ready to let go and move on yet? If most people witnessed something like this, they would probably think thoughts such as, “Come on, this person needs to move on”.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” – Romans 12:1-2

In our Christian walk, there may be times when God is ready for our lives to start moving in a different direction, and it’s important that we submit to Him, and carry out His will for our lives. God can see things from a different perspective than us, so we should trust Him even if we are uncomfortable about what the future may hold. Think back to the high school analogy. If a person wants to stay in high school mode, after that time has passed, they can miss out on a lot of other experiences in life. There’s come a point in life where you have to let go of some things in order to embrace/accept new things.

“Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.” Proverbs 24:27

As God takes us through the preparation process, it’s important that we learn what we need to learn and keep making progress. We shouldn’t try to stay in one place when God has called us to move on to something else.

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
