Getting Out Of Our Comfort Zone

"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps". - Proverbs 16:9...There are times in our lives where God may call us to do something that is out of our comfort zone (or different than the way we've previously done things).  In times like these, we should continue to trust and obey Him. Today's blog entry deals with getting out of our comfort zone.

Change can be a very exciting thing that people look forward to. But in some situations, change can be a difficult/intimidating thing. For example, say you have someone that has played basketball since they were a child. They continued to improve as they got older, and as a result they get recruited to play at the college level. In high school they played the forward position, yet all of the colleges are recruiting the player to play the point guard position. The person in this situation has gotten used to playing forward, and doesn't want to stop, so he asks one of the coaches recruiting him "Why does everybody want me to play guard? I want to play forward...I've always played forward, that just my position." The coach responds by letting him know that while playing forward was a suitable position for him to play in the past, he thinks the player would have much more success as a guard at the college level because of his size and skill set. In high school the other players playing forward were closer to his height, however in college the guys playing forward are 4-5 inches taller than him. The coach doesn't doubt the players ability. In fact, he knows that the player could still have success playing forward, but he thinks the player will have more success playing guard.  After the having the discussion with the coach, things make a lot more sense to the player, and he starts the transition from forward to guard. He was very uncomfortable with the change at first, however as time went on, he makes the adjustment, and goes on to have much success.

Likewise, in our Christian walk, there are times in our lives when God may transition us into something different. And while the reasoning may be different than in the scenario listed above. We should take comfort in the fact that God knows what He's doing. He may cause us to work in a different area of ministry than we're used to working in. Or He may cause to move geographically to a different region for a job. Regardless of what it is that God calls us to do, we should have faith that He knows what's best for us. We shouldn't complain to God about why we don't want to do it. Instead, we should prepare to make the transition, and carry out the assignments that He has given us.

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." - Proverbs 3:5-6

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." - 2 Timothy 1:7
