Giving

“I have showed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to be able to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” - Acts 20:35….Do you give (your money, time, resources, etc) to help others? Today’s blog entry deals with giving.

We live in a society were a lot of emphasis can be put on getting as much as we can for ourselves. And while handling our own responsibilities/obligations is important, we should always remember to give to others. Giving is a biblical principle that is mentioned in the Bible many times. When we give (with the right heart the way that God says we should) we are not only helping other people, but we are also honoring God (see Matthew 25:35-40).

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” –2 Corinthians 9:7

Make sure that when you give, you always do it with a cheerful attitude. For example, if you help someone in financial need by paying one of their bills, don’t say something like “Well geez I was going to use this money to buy some new shoes, but here take it (as you look at them with a frown on your face).” Instead do it with a smile on your face, be thankful that God has put you in a position to be able to give.

If you donate your time by volunteering, don’t constantly gripe to the people you’re helping, saying things such as “man I was wish I wasn’t here.” But rather, make the most of the time that you have with them. Show forth love when you give.

We should never allow our own wants and desires to cause us to become greedy. I’m not saying that it’s wrong to buy some things for ourselves, but rather that we should never get to the point where we spend all of our money, time, and energy on selfish desires. Remember, the material things that we have on earth will eventually pass away, but the work that we (born again Christians) do for God (Evangelism, Discipleship, etc) will be remembered throughout eternity. Let us give God our best effort, and strive to honor Him in everything we do, always keeping Him first.

“Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:37-38

“Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase.” – Proverbs 3:9
