Honesty Is Important

In today’s society, lying has become a normal part of life for many people, however as Christians, we should be truthful at all times. “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.” – Proverbs 12:22. Today’s blog entry is titled “Honesty Is Important”.

Lying can come in a number of different ways. For some people in business, it could be misrepresenting a product they are trying to sell to someone. For another person, it could be lying to a bill collector, saying they are going to pay a bill “tomorrow” just to get the collector off the phone (but really having no intent to pay the bill anytime soon). Or sometimes a person could be under a lot of pressure and tell a lie because they’re afraid that telling the truth will have consequences they don’t want to deal with.

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” – Revelation 21:8

The important thing is to remember is that lying is wrong regardless of what society says. It’s definitely a sin, and not something to be taken lightly. We have a responsibility as Christians to represent Christ in the way we live our lives. If a person gets a reputation for being a liar, it can become hard for others to believe that person, even when the person is telling the truth. Trust is important in friendships, relationships, and interactions with other people in general. Could you picture if you purchased an airline ticked online for one price, however when you were about to board the plane, the attendant came up, and said “You’re going to have to pay an additional $200.00 to board this plane, we used that other price to get you to come here, but that amount is not really enough for you to ride our plane.” Chances are you would be upset about this because they were not truthful with you. Likewise it’s important to make sure that we aren’t doing the same thing to other people in areas of our lives.

It’s also important to remember to choose our words wisely, and not use speaking the truth as a license to mean to other people under the guise “Well hey I was just telling them the truth.” For example don’t walk up to a person who has on shoes you don’t like (and didn’t ask your opinion about the shoes) and say, “Hey I think those shoes are SO UGLY, hey I’m just telling the truth, so don’t get made at me.” This is an extreme example, but my point is that it’s is important to use wisdom when we speak.

So as we continue to grow in our walk with Jesus Christ, let us remember to be honest. Don’t pick up bad habits from the world, be a good example of the way Christians should conduct themselves.

“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;” – Colossians 3:9
