Honor Your Word

When you tell someone you are going to do something (such as help them with a specific task) do you actually follow through? It’s important that we maintain integrity, and avoid making promises that we know we can’t keep, and or don’t intend to keep. Today’s blog deals with keeping your word.

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” – Isaiah 55:11

When God speaks a word, it comes to past. God will never violate His own Word because He is holy and just. He takes what He says very seriously. Likewise, we should take the things we say very seriously. A Christian is to be a living epistle (see 2 Corinthians 3:1-3), an epistle is a letter to be read. So in essence, when people watch our life, they should see a lifestyle that is Christ like. This does not mean that we won’t mistakes, however we should be striving to improve and be more like Christ.

Now I would like to visit a passage of scripture dealing with the parable of two sons which reads as follows:

“But what think ye? A certain man had two sons: and he came to the first, and said, Son, go to work today in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said, I go, sir: and went not.”
– Matthew 21:28-30

In other words one son said he would not go work in the Father’s vineyard, but then repented and ended up going, while the other son said he would go, but didn’t end up going.

Saying yes (to do something) is only one part of the process. If a person goes around telling other people they will help them with things, but never shows up when it is time to help, other people may view them as unreliable and question their credibility. As Christians we are to be ambassadors for Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:20). An ambassador is a representative, and we should make sure that we our representing Christ the right way.

Now obviously there may be times when a person says they will do something, yet are unable to do it because of an unforeseen circumstance that happens. I’m definitely not saying that things will always go exactly as we plan them. I do however, believe that it’s very important that we seek God, and are lead by Him in the decisions that we make. If God impresses upon our heart to do something, we should do it (even if we don’t feel like doing it). When you are doing something out of love, you should be willing to make sacrifices to see that the overall objective is accomplished.

“When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it, for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.” – Ecclesiastes 5:4
