Marriage Mindset

Are you an unmarried person that feels like God is leading you in the direction of marriage (maybe you already have began the courtship process, or maybe you’re on the verge of starting a new relationship)? Today’s blog entry deals with having a marriage mindset. “For this cause shall a man leave his Father and Mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” – Ephesians 5:31

Marriage is a very serious and important commitment. Whether you are currently in a relationship or not, there are things that you can do to prepare yourself for marriage. For starters, we should make sure that we are truly seeking God’s will, and putting Him first in our lives. When we’re focusing on God’s will (instead of our own desires) we can avoid a lot of potential problems. The Bible lets us know that God desires for us to live a holy lifestyle (see Romans 12:1-2). A person that is not married should not be involved in any type of sexual activity. We should not be driven by lust, we should apply God’s word in our lives and walk in the victory that Jesus Christ has given us.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” –2 Corinthians 5:17

It’s also important that we don’t let things from our past hinder us from progressing in the future. If you’ve had a bad experience in a past relationship, pray and ask God to deliver you from the negative effects it has had on you. Do not carry baggage from a previous relationship into a marriage. Make sure that you not trying to get in a relationship as a way to cover up insecurities in your life. It’s important that we deal with any insecurities we may have.

We should study the scriptures well, and have a good understanding of what it truly means to love. If you truly love someone, you should be willing to make sacrifices for them. It shouldn’t always be about what you want, you should also take an interest in what they want. We should make sure that we are not being selfish. We should also manage our money well, and develop good spending habits.

Jesus Christ should be the foundation of every marriage.

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. – Ephesians 5:22-28
