Obedience

Can you think back to a time when you were younger and your parents told you to do something that you didn’t understand (and really didn’t want to do), but you did it anyway out of respect, and as time went on, you later understood why they asked you to do it (realizing how beneficial it was to you)? Today’s blog deals with obedience to God.

“If ye be willing and obedient ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.”- Isaiah 1:19-20

Obedience to God is essential in the Christian walk. By growing in our knowledge of God’s word, we can have a better understanding of what God desires us to do, and how to go about doing it. It’s important to remember that we should always put God’s will ahead of our own. We should never be so attached to something (or someone) that we are willing to disobey God to hold on to it.

As humans, we may sometimes want to try to analyze certain things that happen in our lives and only move forward after we feel that we have a sufficient amount of understanding regarding a situation. However, 2 Corinthians 5:7 says… “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” A Christian’s trust in the Lord, should always carry more weight, than the temporary circumstances they are dealing with.

“Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.” – Proverbs 13:10

When dealing with other people, it’s important that we do not allow pride to cause us to be disobedient to God. For instance, if someone comes over to us and makes a mean/rude comment about something we have on, we shouldn’t allow that to cause us to lose our composure/act ungodly. This can obviously go against our human nature, that basically says, “If you hurt my feelings, I’m going to hurt your feelings too” ”If you make me feel bad, I’m going to make you feel worse”. As Christians this should not be the case.

This is not to say that we can’t respond to someone in a situation like that, but rather that we should not respond in an ungodly way. There’s a difference between calmly saying “You know, I really would appreciate if you would not come around me with negativity.” versus yelling “I KNOW YOU NOT TALKING BOUT MY CLOTHES WITH THAT WRINKLED SHIRT YOU GOT ON, DO YOU EVEN OWN AN IRON!!!”

Never allow the pride associated with “getting back at someone” cause you to compromise who you are as a Christian (never let anything cause you to compromise who you are as a Christian for that matter). Realize that there’s a reason why people act the way they do…Romans 6:16 says “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

Let us make a conscious effort to obey God in every area of our life.

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” – John 14:15
