Our Relationship With God

It’s important to make sure that we aren’t just going through the motions in our Christian walk. We should spend time with Jesus because we truly love Him, and want to grow in our relationship with Him. “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” – Mark 12:30 …. Today's blog entry is titled, “Our Relationship With God.”

Picture this, there’s a couple that has been married for over 10 years. The wife notices that her husband doesn’t compliment her as much as he used to, so she brings it up to him one day saying “You know I really miss the way you used to say nice things about me all the time” to which the husband replies “Well, you already know how I feel about you, so what’s the point in me saying it.” Or maybe the husband notices that his wife doesn’t spend as much time around him as she used to so he says “I really miss the way we used to have those date nights”, to which the wife replies “ I’m really busy now, we have already been on plenty of dates, so what’s the point of going on more.” Communication and fellowship (spending time around each other) is an important part of the continual growth in a marriage, and it’s also important in our walk with God.

“Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.” – Matthew 26:36

The Bible lets us know that Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer. We should follow His example. When we pray, it allows us to focus on God and communicate with Him. Prayer is a way for us to build our relationship with God. It’s something that we should do on a regular basis. Think back to the husband and wife analogy, if the husband only had conversations with his wife because “that’s what husbands are supposed to do”, and his heart really wasn’t in it, then his relationship with his wife will be a reflection of that. Likewise, if we only pray to God because “that’s what Christians are supposed to do” and our hearts are not in it, our relationship with God will be a reflection of that. We shouldn’t view prayer as chore that is to be checked off of our spiritual checklist of things we should do. We should view prayer as an opportunity to spend time with God and build our relationship with Him.

When a person is married, they (should) carry themselves in a different way than a single person does. People who know them well should know that they are married. Likewise as Christians we should carry ourselves in a way that is different than non – Christians, people should be able to notice a difference. As we continue to grow in our relationship with Christ, it will reflect in the way we live our lives. So let us approach each day remembering that we should treat our walk with Christ like a relationship….because it is one. Be faithful to Him, trust Him, and strive to be more like Him each and every day.

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” – John 14:21
