Quality Time With God

If you were looking for a spouse, would the ability to spend quality time with them be a characteristic that you desired? Do you think that you are giving God the type of quality time that you would want your spouse to give to you? Today’s blog entry deals with spending quality time with God.

“And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” Luke 10:27

Before I go to deep into this, I want to acknowledge that I understand as humans living in society, we have responsibilities such as jobs that take up a big portion of our time. So I’m not saying that you should tally up all your work hours, and then tally up all your prayer time hours, and weigh out how your relationship is with God based on that. I also want to let you know that these blog entries are not meant to condemn people, but rather to encourage and promote Christian growth. I definitely have a lot to learn, and I definitely don’t think that I have everything together. My desire is to grow in my relationship with Jesus Christ, and help others in their walk in ways that I can.

Ok, so back to Quality Time….The way that we spend our time, can be a big indication of the things we value. Keeping God first is obviously an important part of the Christian walk. If you ask most professing Christians “who they love most” or “what’s most important in their life”, most would answer God (hopefully all would, but that’s another discussion). However, if we examined the actions of many Christians, they would indicate something totally different. Here’s what I mean…. Let’s take something like Television for example. Some people will make all kinds of time to watch sports (I’ve done this in the past), their favorite TV shows, movies, etc, and then before bed, say a quick prayer and read some Bible verses without even really taking in what they’ve read. Think about how a wife would feel if her husband barely acknowledged her at all the entire day, except for 10-15 minutes right before he went to bed. I think we all know, that she would not be very happy.

Prayer allows us to communicate with God!!! Just think about how major that is. If some people had the opportunity to meet their favorite celebrity, they would drop everything on their agenda to do so, yet we have opportunity to speak with the creator of World (who is obviously much greater than any human), and many people take it for granted. It’s sad when you really think about it.

Reading the Bible helps us get a better understanding of the nature of God, and what He requires of us. The word of God is an incorruptible seed (see 1 Peter 1:23). The very nature of a seed is to grow. If someone has a garden and they plant seeds, and care for the garden properly (watering the seeds, etc) the seeds will grow based on the type of seed that was sown. The person doesn’t have to beg the seeds to grow, but the seeds will grow because it’s the very nature of seeds to grow. If we sow the seed of the Word of God in our lives and obey what it says, we will reap the harvest of that seed, and have a closer relationship with Christ. It’s a privilege to spend time with God, so we should definitely make the most of the time that we spend with Him.

May God continue to lead and guide as you serve Him.
