The Importance of Prayer

In today’s society there are many different methods that people can use to communicate with each other (phone conversations, texting, internet, etc). And while we may spend a lot of time communicating with other people, it’s important that we spend time in prayer (communicating with God). Today’s blog deals with the importance of prayer.

“And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.”- Matthew 6:5

When we pray, it should not be done to gain human recognition for ourselves. It’s also important to realize that prayer doesn’t force God to do what we want Him to. However, prayer allows us to speak to God and speak forth the confidence that we have in Him.

Matthew 6:9 it says “After this manner therefore pray ye, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” This scripture lets us know that it’s important to come before God with reverence. By focusing on the fact that God is our Heavenly Father, it helps us pray with the right mindset (acknowledging that He is powerful and He is the one who is in control). Matthew 6:10 says “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven”. Our prayers should deal with us conforming to the will of God, we should desire for our will to conform to God’s will.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 reads as follows “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
During our prayer time, we should be sure to give God thanks. Each and every one of us has things to be thankful for. Giving thanks for the things that God has already done for us allows us to rehearse the blessings he has already provided and continues to provide.

During our prayer time, God also gives us space for us to ask Him for things as shown in the scriptures below (remember when we ask God for something it should always be done with reverence):

“Give us this day our daily bread. - Matthew 6:11

“I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.” 1 Timothy 2:1

The word supplications (or supplication) can be defined as specific requests. Intercessions are prayers concerning/regarding other people (It’s important that we remember to pray for others).

“And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” – Matthew 6:12-13

Asking God for forgiveness of sins is a very important thing that we should remember to do, and if we’re having trouble with temptation in a certain area we should pray and ask God to help us to overcome what we’re dealing with.

So as we continue to grow in our Christian walk, let us remember to always make time for prayer.

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” – James 5:16
