True Love

The word “Love” is often used in today’s society, but is it really love? Many times people will say they love someone because of the pleasure/enjoyment they are receiving (from that person), and yet overlook the fact that true love involves giving. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16. Today’s blog entry deals with true love.

Love is not measured by what a person can get from another person; however love can be measured by what a person is willing to give to/for another person. We live in a world where many people are focused on pleasing themselves. People often disregard God’s Word and do whatever they feel like doing. However as Christians, we should not be living our lives that way. We should be living to please God. If we truly love Him, we should obey Him. As it says in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” - Ephesians 5:25

When a person truly loves another person, they should be willing to make sacrifices for them. For instance, if a husband says he loves his wife because she’s pretty, she’s a good cook, she constantly compliments him, etc….and yet he’s unwilling to do anything for her (refuses to make any sacrifices for her), then he’s not displaying true biblical love. He’s simply listing things about her that he enjoys. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s wrong to appreciate things about a person, but the point I’m making is that just because person A enjoys what person B does for them, doesn’t automatically mean that person A loves person B. We should love people regardless of what they can do for us.

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

When we think about love, we should think about what we can give to help another person. In the example of the husband mentioned earlier, it could mean him spending time with his wife, doing things that she likes to do. There are many different ways that he can express his love to his wife, but the important thing is that he’s actively displaying love to his wife.

As Christians, it’s important that we do not allow ourselves to become selfish. We should continually remember the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us. So as we continue to grow in our walk with Jesus, let us make an effort to display true love.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13
