Using Our Time Wisely

“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.” – Romans 13:11-12…The way we spend our time can give a lot of insight on where our priorities are. Today’s blog entry deals with using our time wisely.

There are so many things that can consume a person’s time (Work, school, relationships, television, internet, movies, video games, etc). It’s important that we make the best use of all the time that God gives us. Before I go to deep into this, I want to point out the fact that working is important, however a person should never put their job (or anything else) ahead of God. With that being said, I want to focus more on what a person does when they are not at work (in their free time). If we want to grow in our relationship with Christ, it’s important that we consistently spend time with Him. It’s also important that we complete the assignments that He has given us. God has blessed each one of us with gifts/talents and we should put them to use in the proper way. One of the things that can hinder a person from putting those gifts and talents to use is when they waste time. Say for instance, God has called a person to write a book on a certain subject that would encourage and help many people. However, instead of focusing on writing the book, the person spends an excessive amount of time playing video games, or watching T.V.....Distractions are a tool that the enemy can use to get people off task, so it’s important that we don’t allow ourselves to waste time with distractions.

“Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” – Psalms 37:4-5

I want to make it clear that I’m not saying it’s wrong to be entertained (The men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament just ended on April 2, and I enjoyed catching some of the action on T.V.), however when we do set aside some time for entertainment purposes (Television, Internet, Video Games, etc) we should be mindful of what we are watching. We should not be entertained by things that dishonor God. As we continue to grow in our walk with Christ, our desires should become more in line with His desires.

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” – Psalm 133:1

It’s also good for us to spend time around other born again Christians. This allows us to encourage each other, learn from each other, and be accountable to each other. As it says in Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

So as we continue to live our lives, let us take an inventory of how we are spending our time, and make the most of every moment that God blesses us with.

“Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.” - Colossians 4:5
