What Are You Saying?

The words we speak can often be a direct reflection of what we’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about. The words we speak can also give insight into what direction our lives are heading in. It’s important that we speak positive words that line up with God’s Word. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” – Proverbs 18:21. Today’s blog entry is titled “What Are You Saying?"

In order to speak the right type of things, we should be spending time thinking about the right type of things. As it says in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” We should renew our mind with the word of God each day, and focus our thoughts on things that line up with His Word. With that being said, if negative thoughts do try to come into our mind, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to speak those words, we should speak positive things. If you’re on your way to a job interview and thoughts of doubt (about you having a good interview) come into your mind, counter those thoughts, by speaking something positive such as “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” – Philippians 4:13

It’s important to speak words in faith, and not speak words out of fear or doubt. “For we walk by faith, not by sight:”- 2 Corinthians 5:7. Sometimes it may be hard for us to wrap our minds around how God is going to do something. But it’s important for us to remain in faith, and not look at the circumstances. For example, if someone is trying to get scholarship money for college, and they haven’t received any of the scholarships they have applied to yet, they shouldn’t allow themselves to start saying things such as “I’m never going to get a scholarship”. They should continue to ask God for help regarding the situation, and continue to speak positive words regarding the situation.

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.” – Isaiah 54:17

If someone starts speaking negative words about you that don’t line up with the Word of God, don’t allow their words to bring you down. Sometimes a person can be intentionally trying to hurt you with words. Or in some situations they may do it under the guise of meaning well (or they may really mean well) saying something such as “Everyone else in our family has had an issue in this area, so you can expect to have the same issue”. In either situation, counter their negative words by speaking God’s Word. And don’t get me wrong, I definitely think there is a place to heed the warnings of others as it relates to things that have happened to family members in the past, but my point is that we should never allow someone to put a label on us that is contrary to who God says we are. Likewise, it’s also important for us to be mindful of the words that we speak about others. It’s important that we don’t say hurtful things that tear others down. We should speak edifying words that build them up. We should speak the truth in love.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. - Ephesians 4:29
