What Do You Value?

It’s important for us to examine our lives, and take a look at what we are truly placing value on. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:33. Today’s blog entry is titled “What Do You Value?”

The things that we place value on can play a large role in the way we live our lives. If a person values the opinions of other people over the Bible, they put themselves in a position to constantly live a lifestyle of trying to please others, instead of trying to please God. The way a person spends their time is a big indicator of what they place value on. If a person can always make time for things such as: Watching TV, being on the internet, texting, talking to friends, etc., but spends very little time reading the Bible, praying, praising God, their actions are showing that they would rather spend time doing secular things than spending time with God.

It’s very important that we think about the big picture. If we’re not careful, it can be easy to get caught up in the current trends of the World today. We should be living our lives with an eternal perspective. God put us on earth for a reason. We should be seeking Him, and desiring to carry out His will. The enemy understands that some people will not get involved in things such as: fornication, pornography, partying, etc. But if he can distract a person with excessive use of the TV, the internet, video games, etc., it can still do a lot of damage. Think of it this way….You have an NBA basketball player that is a starter and key player for his team, who has developed a habit of excessively watching DVD movies at home. He does it so much to the point that he starts missing games. While this player may be extremely talented, he can’t help his team on the court if he’s not showing up to games. Someone reading this may be thinking, “Come on that’s ridiculous, what NBA player would do that”. However, if we excessively occupy our time with the cares of this world, we are in essence doing what the basketball player is doing (and our assignments from God are obviously a whole lot more important than basketball).
Eternity is a very long time. It’s important that we give the best effort that we can serving God. The things that we do can have a huge impact on other people. It’s important to have a genuine relationship with Christ, and renew our minds daily with the Word of God. We shouldn’t allow ourselves to pick up the bad habits of the world. Many people in this world place a high value on status. Being validated by other people is of great importance to them, however if you’re not pleasing God with your life, you’re wasting your time. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” – Mark 8:36

It’s good to examine our lives, and take an inventory of the way we’re spending our time, and money. We should be good stewards over the things that God has blessed us with. If we find that we have been placing value on the wrong things, we should repent, and focus our attention on the things of God. We should be sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others, and helping others grow in their walk with Him. So as we go about our day today, let us ask ourselves “What Do I Value?”

Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day. – Psalm 71:8
