Wisdom

Have you ever heard the saying “Don’t go grocery shopping when you hungry”? The thought behind this is that a hungry person has a greater chance of buying based on how they feel at the time, instead of thinking things through. It’s important that we use wisdom in our lives when making decisions, instead of doing things based on the emotions we feel at the time. “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” – Proverbs 2:6. Today’s blog entry deals with wisdom.

Learning is an important part of life, and it’s something that we should continue to do throughout our lives. Can you think back to when you we’re younger and started learning things such the “ABC’s”, Addition/Subtraction, etc. When we look at things like that today, they may seem very simple, however learning those things are a foundation for learning more advanced things. For example, in order for a person to read, they need to have an understanding of the alphabet (letters, symbols, etc.). It’s also important for a person to put what they learn into practice. A student can study really hard for a test, and know the information well, however if they don’t fill out the information when they take the test, they won’t get credit. It’s not just enough for them to know the information, they need to apply what they know and complete the test.

“When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:” – Proverbs 2:10-11

Knowledge helps a person improve their skill sets, and wisdom helps a person know when/how to apply the knowledge they have. For example, a person may have knowledge of how to drive a car, and wisdom to know that they should adjust their speed if they are on the road in the middle of snow storm. When God blesses us with something (whether it’s a new job, a business, etc), we should seek Him for wisdom so that we make good decisions, and make the most of the opportunities He gives us. There’s a passage of scripture in 2 Kings 3:5-12, that is very insightful. I would definitely recommend reading it sometime. In verse 5 God appears to Solomon in a dream, and asks Solomon what he wanted God to give him. If you read on you can see what Solomon asked for.

As we continue to learn the Bible, and grow in our walk with Christ, it’s important that we apply what we learn to our lives. Don’t allow the world’s way of thinking to get you off track. Christians should be influencing the world positively (instead of allowing the world to influence us negatively). We should never get to the point where we feel like “ok God, I can take it from here”. Continually seek God for wisdom.

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.” – James 3:17
