A Response to the Current Events

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”  – Matthew 28:18-20. Today’s blog entry is titled, “A Response to the Current events…”

The aforementioned passage in the book of Matthew serves as a great reminder of the importance of discipleship… “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations…” This passage also serves as a comforting reminder that Jesus has power and authority, and will always be there to help us throughout our Christian walk. With that being said, we may witness things in the world that leave us wondering how we should respond as Christians. From the violent acts that have taken place, such as the Church shooting in Charleston, to the recent supreme court ruling legalizing homosexual marriage in the United States; thoughts such as “why did this happen” and “what should we do” have been on the minds of many people.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” – Ephesians 6:10-11

We live in a fallen world (See Genesis Chapter 3), and while there will come a time when there is a new heaven and a new earth (See 2 Peter 3:13 and Revelation 21:1), this current world has many issues as a result of sin. As Romans 6:16 says, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” The devil is real, and the devil works through people, which brings me to a key point that I want to deal with…The importance of discipleship.

As Christians it’s important for us to continue to make disciples on a regular basis. For each person that we lead to Christ, and help grow in their relationship with Him, that’s one MORE person who is walking in the truth, and one LESS person who is walking in deception. Does this mean that every sinful act in the world will be stopped right now by doing so?... No, passages of Scripture such as 2 Timothy 3:1-5 let us know that there are some things in this world that will inevitably happen. However, when we obey Jesus’ instructions to go and make disciples we can greatly impact the lives of others in a positive way, and the people that we disciple can in turn go out and do the same thing, which leads to more people living for Christ. This can lead to positive change taking place amongst our friends, in our communities, regions, etc.
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” – Romans 12:1-2

It’s important for us to renew our minds with the word of God so that we do not become desensitized to what is happening around us. Homosexuality is still a sin regardless of what any human being says (See 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).  When we have the truth in front of us every day, it serves as a reminder of how serious God is. So as we continue to grow in our walk with Jesus Christ, let us remember to go and make disciples. Let us also continue to pray for the families and friends of those who lost loved ones in Charleston, and continue to pray for this country/world in general.

“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;” – Colossians 4:2
