How to Respond if a Door Closes in Your Life

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV).  Today’s blog entry is titled “How to respond if a door closes in your life”…

When we have an expectation for something to happen in our lives, and things don’t happen the way we thought they would, it can lead to disappointment/frustration and questions such as…Why did this happen? What am I going to do now?...If a door closes in our lives, it’s important that we don’t panic, but instead spend in prayer asking God for guidance and direction about the situation.

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” - Joshua 1:9

There could be a number of reasons why God allows a door to close in our lives. In some situations it can be a timing thing, for example, say there is a High School Freshman Football player who has a lot of talent and wants to start off playing Varsity right away, yet the coaching staff decides to move him up to JV but not Varsity yet because they would like for him to build his body up more. He will eventually play Varsity, but now is not the time. In our walk as Christians, it’s important that we don’t get discouraged during the building process. There’s a lot we can learn when we trust God and do things His way.

Another reason why a door could close could be because a person is entering a different season of their life. For example, let’s go back to the High School Football player scenario… The player eventually gets moved up to Varsity and goes on to have a very successful High School football career, getting recruited by a number of colleges. He accepts a scholarship to play college football (and graduates from High School). After he graduates from High School, he’s no longer eligible to play High School football; And while he may miss being able to play in High School initially, he’s making progress and moving on to a better situation by playing in College.  As we enter a new season of our lives, we may have to let go of some things that we really enjoyed in order to move on to the next thing that God has for us.

Another reason why a door could close is because it’s not a good situation for us to be involved in and God is protecting us from making a choice that could lead to a lot of issues down the road. Remember that God’s ways are higher than our ways (See Isaiah 55:8-9). He has a different perspective on things than we have so it’s important that we trust Him, and continue to follow Him, even when things happen in our lives that we don’t understand.

These are just some reasons why a door could close in our lives, but regardless of the reason why, it’s important for us to stand on God’s Word, and not allow ourselves to become discouraged.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6
